Grainne Murphy breaks Irish Junior and Senior Records

Sunday 7th February 2010

Swim Irelands Dave McCullagh memorial meet concluded today in the University of Limerick Swimming Pool.  Grainne Murphy was in impressive form today as she smashed the Irish Junior and Senior 200m Breaststroke record.  In this morning’s heats Murphy recorded a time of 2.32.44 knocking an impressive 02.32 seconds off Fiona Doyle’s Junior record and 01.04 seconds off Emma Robinson’s senior record set in 2004.  Murphy then went on to break the record she had set in the heats in this afternoon’s final to take gold and set a new Senior and Junior Irish record time of 2.32.40.

Murphy also took gold in the women’s 400m Freestyle event in a time of 4.17.13.  Slovenian Tjasa Oder (4.22.49) took second place with Trojan SC’s Nuala Murphy (4.33.83) in third.  In an exciting men’s final Aer Lingus swimmer Andrew Meegan (4.07.16) came in, in first place just ahead of Ards SC’c Conor Leaney (4.07.82) and Christopher Bryan (4.12.31) Ennis SC.

Irish Swimmers qualify for European Competition

Saturday 6th February 2010

Swimming’s Dave McCullagh Memorial Gala continued today, Saturday, in the University of Limerick Arena Swimming Pool.  The event is the first National Irish Competition since the introduction of the new FINA swimsuit rule on January 1st 2010.  Today’s first session saw two Irish swimmers qualify for the 2010 European Juniors in Helsinki in July and 1 swimmer qualify for the European LC Championships in Budapest in August.  Sycerika McMahon (2:06.00) of Leander SC and Tara Dunne (2:06.60) of Ballina Dolphins both qualified for European Juniors in the heats of the women’s 200m Freestyle competition.  Dunne’s experience at the European Juniors in 2009 will stand to her in Finland while McMahon qualifies for the first time but will feel confident returning to the venue where she had a very successful European Youth Olympics in 2009 winning 3 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Club Children’s Officer Training – a must for all CCO’s and DP’s

All Swim Ireland Clubs will be required to have one Club Children’s Officer who has attended this course by the end of 2010. 

The Club Children’s Officer training day is an Irish Sports Council course specifically designed for Club Children’s Officers + Designated Persons building on the Child Protection in Sport workshop (the initial 4 hour training you are all required to attend).

In order to accommodate as many Swim Ireland Club Children’s Officers as possible this course is being run in the Munster region initially with dates to follow in the other regions.  All Clubs in Munster have received this information previoulsy, however members from other regions are very welcome to attend on

Dave McCullagh Memorial Gala Kicks off at the UL Arena

Friday 5th February 2010

The Dave McCullagh Memorial Gala got under way today at the UL Arena at the University of Limerick. This three day event brings together Ireland’s top swimmers to compete for national honours in the first competition of 2010. The competition also provides an opportunity for qualification to the Irish national squad ahead of the major international competitions this summer, the European LC Championships in Budapest this August, The European Juniors in Helsinki and the World Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

 

 

Trish Mayon, Education and Development Officer and Robert Mooney, High Performance for Swim Ireland will be present at the Dave McCullagh Gala on behalf of Swim Ireland this week in Limerick from Friday 5th February - Sunday 7th February 2010.

During the sessions Trish and Robert will be available and very happy to answer queries or take comments from swimmers, parents, coaches, team managers or officials who wish to approach them and they will be based at an education stand during the competition

 

 

NAC Swimming Club will run a SC Gala and Aquatics Festival in the NAC on Sunday 21st February 2010

Attached are the files for our Festival of Aquatics being held on Sunday 21st February 2010.  Please note that we are running 2 separate galas on the day.  The Main event being a Short Course Gala.  In this we are including Cannon Ball relays (teams of 6 of all age groups) A Skins event - 50m Free qualify in events 11 and 12 being run in the morning session, The Top 10 will qualify for Skins Event in the afternoon session. 

We are pleased to announce that The Dave Malone Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the overall winners of the 100m Free event.

 

 

On 4th January 2010, FINA issued its final list of suits approved for use in competition in 2010. Until such time as we receive further guidance from FINA, Swim Ireland will continue to allow all swimsuits which are either listed on the final FINA list or meet the criteria below: 

  1. Swimsuits for men may not extend above the navel or below the knee and for women may not cover the neck or extend past the shoulders or below the knee
  2. No zippers or other fastening devises are allowed except for a waist tie on a brief or jammer
  3. Suits must be of textile material and must not be made of any rubberized type of material such as polyurethane or neoprene.

Swim Ireland will hold a High Performance Open Water Distance Training Camp at the NAC, Dublin on Sunday 18th April, 2010. The purpose of this camp is to explore the opportunities for Irish distance and Open Water swimmers who are interested in getting involved in the 5k and 10k Open Water events at International level.

Selection for this camp will be based on published criteria, see the attached information leaflet for further details.
