Austrians prove too strong for Ireland

Saturday March 15th 2014:  Austria proved too strong for Ireland in the final round of pool games at the EU 8 Nations Water Polo Tournament at the University of Limerick Swimming Pool this morning.

Ireland had beaten both Switzerland and Scotland yesterday and should have been confident going into the game against Austria who had yesterday drawn with Switzerland.

Austria’s Johannes Gratel scored the opening goal after 3 minutes of play, Russel Simkins leveled the game for Ireland but further Austrian goals from Bernhard Hengl and Sebastian Donis gave them a two goal advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Ireland’s Adam Caulfield was quick off the mark in the second quarter to put the ball past Austrian keeper Salkan Samardzic but Austria hit back with a flurry of goals from Pedro Steinocher (2), Hengl, Matej Jakovljevic and Christophe Koroknani to leave Ireland rattled and trailing 9-4 at half time.

Austria continued to dominate the second half of the game with Paul Kovac, Christian Bohme and Ferenc Makray adding their names to the score sheet while goals from Ireland’s Josef Kresak and Eoin Nolan were not enough to diminish the Austrian lead and they ran out 15-7 winners.

Ireland will now face Malta in the first semi-final at 6.30pm this afternoon. Malta, dominated again today with an 18-9 win over Denmark who will play Austria in the second semi-final at 7.45pm.

In today’s other group games Scotland won in a very physical encounter with Switzerland which ended 11-9. While Czech Republic recorded their first win of the tournament beating Wales 13-6.
