Quinn and Sweeney Post Lifetime Bests on Day 1 at European Championships

Four Irish swimmers got their European Championships campaign underway on the first day of competition at the Velodrome in Berlin today. Barry Murphy, Nicholas Quinn, Dan Sweeney and Brendan Hyland were all in action prior to competing in their main events later this week. Murphy, Quinn and Sweeney all swam in heat 2 of the 100m Breaststroke. Ireland Junior Ladies Win 5 Nations Silver

The Irish Junior Ladies Water Polo team traveled to Thun, Switzerland last weekend for the 5 Nations Water Polo tournament. Coach Tadhg Murphy, assistant coach Aideen Conway and team manager Debbie Heery took 15 players to compete with Denmark, Scotland, Czech Republic, and host nation Switzerland. Ireland had a fantastic first day seeing off Scotland 18-6 to start their tournament and then battled with Switzerland just hours later to come out on top 11-9 on the final whistle. RIP Ernest “Square” McCartney

Swim Ireland are saddened to learn of the passing of swimming and water polo star of the 1940′s and 1950′s Ernest “Square” McCartney(Wellington). Ernest attended the 1948 Olympic Games in London and was honoured by Swim Ireland in 2011 and by the Olympic Council of Ireland in 2012 for competing in the Games. Deepest sympathy is extended to his family and friends.

Top 10 Finish for Bryan is Gruelling 25K Open Water Event

Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane Elected to Olympic Council

On Monday 11th August the Olympic Council of Ireland held its AGM in the Conrad Hotel, Dublin. Pat Hickey was elected unopposed for a new four-year term as President of the OCI, extending a record term of office since 1989. The Election of the new OCI Officers and Executive Committee was then finalised  with Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane elected as a new member. Impressive Bryan 16th in Tough 10K Open Water Event at European Championships

Ireland’s Chris Bryan has today finished 16th overall at the LEN European Open Water Championships in Berlin, Germany.  Racing in a field of 39 swimmers Bryan put in an impressive performance in an exciting race where the result could have gone any way. Swimmers racing in the 10K completed four 2.5 kilometre circuits at the ‘Regattastrecke Grünau’ with Bryan positioned well throughout. Scully Closes out Paralympic Swimming European Championships with Season’s Best 50m Backstroke

There was just one Irish swimmer in action on the final night of swimming at the Paralympic European Championships in Eindhoven, Holland. James Scully put in an impressive performance to close out the competition for Ireland’s five senior Paralympic swimmers. James Scully has secured Ireland’s first medal on the opening day of competition at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven, Holland.
