All courses and CPD workshops are delivered by trained Swim Ireland Tutor Assessors, who facilitate the sharing of knowledge - ensuring the maintenance and development of aquatic expertise.  These workshops are either delivered in the standard course format in a classroom and on deck or through our Swim Training & Education Platform (STEP)

Teaching Courses

Level 1 Assistant Swimming Teacher

This qualification develops your knowledge, skills and abilities as an Assistant Swimming Teacher.


This course will enable you to; 

  • Deliver a pre-prepared lesson plan
  • Be responsible for up to six swimmers whilst working under the supervision of a qualified Level 2 Swimming Teacher
  • Have a basic understanding of Core Aquatic Skills and four swimming strokes
  •  Provide assistance in and out of the water

Minimum age to attend this course is 15 years

Level 2 Swimming Teacher

This qualification develops your knowledge, skills and abilities as a Swimming Teacher. It builds on the Level 1 Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification and gives you the skills to independently deliver swimming lessons.


This course will enable you to;

  • Prepare and deliver lesson plans and schemes of work
  • Be responsible of swimmers and Level 1 Assistant Swimming Teachers
  • Have an in-depth understanding of Core Aquatic Skills and four swimming strokes
  • Observe, analyse and feedback on faults and implement corrective practices to develop swimmers


Minimum age to attend this course is 16 years and candidates must hold a Level 1 Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification

Pre-FUNdamentals Teacher

The Swim Ireland Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification will allow you to access this Pre-Fundamentals Course. 


This course will enable you to;

  • Prepare and deliver lesson plans to babies and children under the age of 4 years
  • Have an in-depth understanding of principles of pre-fundamentals
  • Deliver on the principles of pre-fundamentals
  • Deliver on the principles of child development in the foundation stages

Minimum age to attend this course is 18 years and candidates must hold Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification

Additional Support Needs Teacher (ASN)

The Swim Ireland Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification will allow you to access this ASN Teacher course.


This course will enable you to;

  • Prepare and deliver integrated and ASN specific lesson plans
  • Recognise the associated adaptations that may be required for certain physical, sensory, intellectual and hidden impairments, within an aquatic environment
  • Recognise and display the Golden Rules of ASN teaching within an aquatic environment

Minimum age to attend this course is 16 years and candidates must hold Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification

Coaching Courses - Diving, Open Water, Swimming, Synchro & Water Polo

Level 1 Assistant Coach

These courses are designed to introduce the knowledge, skills and practices for the safe, ethical and effective support of coaching sessions in Diving, Open Water, Swimming, Synchronised Swimming or Water Polo.


These courses will enable coaches' to;

  • Deliver a pre-prepared session plan
  • Be responsible of up to six athletes whilst working under the supervision of a qualified Level 2 Coach
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of disciple specific coaching skills, coach and athlete development and good practice in coaching ethics
  • Have a basic understanding of the technical elements of the discipline

Level 2 Coach

These courses will build on the knowledge, skills and practices developed at Level 1 and will introduce additional further principles surrounding sport science in relation to the aquatic environment.  The course will allow attendees to deliver unsupervised training sessions in Diving, Open Water, Swimming, Synchronised Swimming or Water Polo.


These courses will enable coaches' to;

  • Prepare and deliver session plans and training cycles
  • Be responsible for athletes and Level 1 Assistant Coaches
  • Have an in-depth understanding of disciple specific coaching skills, coach and athlete development and good practice in coaching ethics
  • Deliver on basic principles surrounding nutrition, hydration, psychology, strength and conditioning, biomechanics and physiology within an aquatic environment
  • Manage and communicate effectively in the development of athletes


Minimum age to attend this course is 16 years and candidates must hold Level 1 Assistant Coaching qualification.

Level 3 Coach

The Level 3 Coaching qualification will ensure coaches have the skills to work with competitive and elite performers in line with Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) across all elements of water based and land based training activities.  Attendees will also develop the skills to identify when athletes require additional input from support professionals and how to access this.


These courses will enable coaches' to;

  • Plan, prepare and deliver long-term coaching plans
  • Evaluate effectiveness plans in practice
  • Manage a coaching programme
  • Lead a team of Level 1 and Level 2 Assistant Coaches and Coaches
  • Have an ability to develop and adapt coaching style to implement effective coaching practices
  • Implement elements of nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning, biomechanics and physiology into long-term plans within a club environment


Minimum age to attend this course is 18 years and candidates must hold Level 2 Coaching qualification.

Technical Courses

Level 1 Team Manager

This course is for volunteers who wish to act as Team Manager for their club at competitions, club outings and away trips (both home and abroad).


Minimum age to attend this course is 20 years. You can attend this course without Vetting NVB or Access NI and a valid Safeguarding Certificate, however if you wish to at in the role of Team Manager these are required.

Level 2 Team Manager

This course is aimed at experienced club Team Managers and those who have assisted on regional trips, the course is designed to upskill Team Managers to take on the role of Lead Team Manager on regional trips and have a pool of experienced and qualified Team Managers to call on for national teams.


Minimum age to attend this course is 20 years. You can attend this course without Vetting NVB or Access NI and a valid Safeguarding Certificate, however if you wish to at in the role of Team Manager these are required.

Level 1 Swimming Official

The purpose of the Level 1 Official course is an introduction to Officiating and understanding of the Swim Ireland Officials structure. It provides for an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Timekeepers, the associated operating procedures and covers FINA Rule SW 2.9 along with other duties for working at swimming competitions.


Qualifies you to fulfil the role of Timekeeper at all levels up to and including National Championships

Level 2 Swimming Official

The purpose of the Level 2 course is to understand the rules and responsibilities of the Judge, it covers FINA Rules SW 2.6 & 2.7 relating to the Inspector of turns and Judges of Strokes respectively. Each of the strokes- Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle and Medley swimming are covered in detail, along with the reporting of stroke violations to the Referee.


Qualifies you to fulfil the role of Turn Judge and Stroke Judge at all levels up to and including National Championships.
