The Irish Junior Ladies Water Polo team traveled to Thun, Switzerland last weekend for the 5 Nations Water Polo tournament.
Coach Tadhg Murphy, assistant coach Aideen Conway and team manager Debbie Heery took 15 players to compete with Denmark, Scotland, Czech Republic, and host nation Switzerland.
Ireland had a fantastic first day seeing off Scotland 18-6 to start their tournament and then battled with Switzerland just hours later to come out on top 11-9 on the final whistle.
Day 2 would be a much tougher test, starting with a very tight game against Denmark, but the Irish girls dug deep and won through with a 1 goal victory 12-11.
Unfortunately in the later game, the Czechs proved too strong, beating Ireland 24-5, and the final would be a repeat of this game, on Sunday.
Ireland v Czech Republic Final
The Irish girls had learned from their previous days meeting with the Czech team and at the end of the 1st quarter there was just 1 goal between them. At half time the Czechs began to pull away slightly. The 3rd quarter saw the Irish girls put up a good fight, and they gave it everything until the final whistle. It wasn’t to be in the end, the Czech Republic won the Gold medals 20-10 with Ireland taking Silver. Tadhg Murphy and his team will have been very happy with the improvement in the girls performance 2nd time round.
Huge congratulations to all of the players and management on a successful tournament.
