Sycerika McMahon and Fiona Doyle have secured places in tonight’s 50m Breaststroke semi-finals at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin.
McMahon, swimming in heat 4 of 5, swam a new lifetime best of 31.02 and finished 3rd in her heat to go through as the fifth fastest qualifier for the semi-final. The 19 year old won Silver at the European Championships in 2012 in the event in 31.27 seconds, her previous best of 31.12 stands from the Commonwealth Games in July.
Fiona Doyle progressed to the semi-final in 13th place overall. Doyle’s time of 31.63 was just .7 of a second off her best and Irish Senior Record of 30.93.
World Record Holder in the 50m Breaststroke Ruta Meilutyte returned from the World Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China which finished yesterday with two Gold medals in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke to qualify with the fastest time for tonight’s semi-final in 30.73 seconds.
The 50m Breaststroke semi-final’s take place at 3.21pm with both McMahon and Doyle in the second race.
Less than 20mins after the 50m Breaststroke heats McMahon was back in the water for the 200m Butterfly Heats. The Texas A&M swimmer swam her second personal best of the morning touching in 2:13.75 knocking over a second off her previous best of 2:15.22 from the European Junior Swimming Championships in Serbia in 2011. She missed out on the semi-final in the event by just one tenth of a second with Russia’s Yana Martynova claiming the final position in 2:13.66.
Dan Sweeney finished his Europeans campaign with a lifetime best swim in the 50m Freestyle. Sweeney took over half a second off his previous best of 24.67 to touch in 24.07 seconds.
