SWIM IRELAND ATHLETES ARE THE FIRST TO TRAIN AND LIVE AT NATIONAL SPORTS CAMPUS
Tuesday February 18th 2014: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar was on hand to launch the new athlete accommodation at the National Sports Campus in Blanchardstown earlier this month. Four Irish swimmers training at Swim Ireland’s NAC Performance Centre are the first athletes to live and train on campus following a joint renovation of accommodation on the grounds by Swim Ireland and the National Sports Campus Development Authority.
“I am delighted that the swimmers have become the first athletes to live on campus” commented Minister Varadkar “I hope there will be many more from other sports in future. Living on site means they can save time commuting giving them more time to train. It also means that they are close to the Institute of Sport if they need an assessment or test. I want to commend the National Sports Campus and Swim Ireland for the foresight they have shown by enhancing their sport through the facilities available.”
Speaking at the launch Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane, said: “Swim Ireland are delighted to be able to offer our athletes the opportunity to live and train on Campus. The new accommodation is the ideal situation for our athletes to be in and we look forward to further growth and development of these facilities in the coming years”
“Swim Ireland are striving to compete at the highest level of swimming” continued Keane “and with Performance Centres and coaches in place across the four regions of Ireland, we are now in a great position to provide the best opportunities for our swimmers to compete at a World level.”
Among the new residents is 2012 Olympian and European Bronze medallist Barry Murphy and Commonwealth Games hopeful Bethany Carson. The swimmers now have all requirements on Campus including the 50m swimming pool, gym facilities, the Institute of Sport and housing. “Moving into the athlete accommodation has been of great benefit to my training regime” said Murphy “It is the most professional and convenient set up I have ever worked in”
CEO of the National Sports Campus David Conway “We welcome and are delighted that Swim Ireland are the first athletes availing of our onsite accommodation and we know it will assist them in the implementation of their high performance programme.”Read More
