Ireland’s Rebecca Reid knocked out a second personal best time today as she moved up the rankings in the semi-final of the 50m Backstroke at the European Junior Swimming Championships.

Reid came into today’s event with a best time of 29.90, swimming 29.63 in the heats the 16-year-old advanced to the semi-final in 14th overall. A gutsy swim in the semi-final then saw Reid lower that time again to 29.49 which moved her to 13th overall in the event.

Reid is back in the pool tomorrow for the 200m Individual Medley where she is ranked 18th and after today’s performance, will be a real contender for a semi-final place.

The penultimate day of action in Helsinki will see eight individual and a relay swim. Maria Godden and Ellen Cassidy are first up in the 100m Backstroke. Jack McMillan swims his main event, the 200m Freestyle, and will be joined in the heats by Finn McGeever. Julia Knox and Amelia Kane join Reid in the 200m Individual Medley and Ireland will be one of 25 countries entered in the Mixed Medley Relay.
