Ireland’s Sycerika McMahon and Fiona Doyle could not progress from the heats of the 200m Breaststroke on the fourth day of competition at the European Swimming Championships in Berlin.
McMahon posted the faster time of the two touching in 2:31.81 to finish 6th in her heat and 21st overall. Doyle clocked a time of 2:32.23 to finish 23rd overall. Russia’s Vitalina Simonova was the fastest qualifier in 2;25.46 while World Record holder Rikke Moeller Pedersen was 6th in 2:27.42.
Tomorrow will see five of Ireland’s six swimmers in the pool with Sycerika McMahon first up in the 200m Freestyle while Brendan Hyland swims the 100m Butterfly, an event in which he is the current Irish Record holder in 54.50.
Barry Murphy, Nicholas Quinn and Dan Sweeney all swim the heats of the 50m Breaststroke. Murphy, currently ranked 10th in the event, should secure a semi-final in his main event. The Dubliner won 50m Breaststroke Bronze at the European SC Championships (25m) in December last year.
