Out of the Water – July / August 2016

An occasional look at developments outside of the pool around the administration and development of our sport…

Water Polo

Swim Ireland is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Gary O’Brien to the post of National Development Manager for Water Polo. Gary takes up the post on a consultancy basis and will be in Ireland for 6 months of the year (spread out over 12 months) to work closely with our Clubs, National Teams and Coaches to really drive the development of the sport forward. This is an exciting time for the water polo and really shows Swim Irelands commitment to growing the sport and moving forward with the Development Plan. Gary is no stranger to Irish Water Polo having delivered a number of very successful education conferences and clinics over the past year, as well as a very successful player in his own right having been a member of the National Team as well as a number of big clubs around the globe.

Gary will be in Ireland on an initial visit from the 27th July until the 15th of August where he will be aiming to meet with as many clubs, national coaches and start to develop a plan of action for the coming year. Going forward Gary will be running a number of exciting new CPD’s, coaching clinics and training weekends for players and coaches alike. If you have any questions please contact Amanda Ni Ghabhann at waterpolo@swimireland.ie

Over the past number of months there have been a large number of changes taking place within the Education department. Joni Harding has recently been appointed as the new Education Business Manager and she brings a wealth of aquatics knowledge to the department having spent a large part of her life immersed in the sport. Joni will lead the education department into a new era as she will look to bring about some new and exciting changes. One big change we have seen so far is the development of a 12 month education calendar which outlines all the courses and CPD’s that will be delivered around the country in the coming year. Joni will be going on maternity leave at the end of August and we wish her all the best for her pending arrival.

David Stronge has been appointed in the last week to offer further support to the department and comes to Swim Ireland with a strong coaching background having completed his Level 3 qualification and has worked as a coach for a number of years. David will lead on a number of new projects, including but not limited to developing a new range of interactive online CPD’s. David will also be the lead on arranging CPD and Safeguarding courses around the country.

Louise O’Toole still continues to lead on Associate membership and licensing within the department with Julie O’Connell providing support across the department whilst also leading on the day to day operations of our qualification courses. Mary Garvey will still be involved in a part time basis providing support to our tutor workforce.

The future is bright as we enter a new phase for the department, with a number of new projects in the pipeline that will be rolled out over the coming year.

Young People

Parent Support Questionnaire

We are looking for feedback from our athletes about how and what they enjoyed about their parents watching/supporting their participation in sport. We will be focussing on positive parent involvement in sport during the week 3rd to 9th October 2016 and would hope to use your feedback to help promote this. Giving your name or club is optional on the form, we would like to credit people with their feedback but are very happy just to get your thoughts. Think about what you liked about having your parents watch you – what they said and how they supported your sport. If any club would like to put this in a video we will be very pleased to see this as well https://form.jotformeu.com/62003298697362 We are looking for as many comments as possible by the end of August. Thank you for your help and participation
