Team Ireland’s Nicholas Quinn was the first Irish swimmer to take to the water at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games today as he warmed up for his main event, the 200m Breaststroke, in the heats of the 100m Breaststroke.
A solid swim from the Castlebar man saw him 4th in heat two in 1:01.29, just off his best time of 1:00.95, and placed 33rd overall. The time is Quinn’s third best 100m Breaststroke time ever, his top two came from the final (1:00.95) and semi-final (1:00.00) of the event at the Eindhoven Swim Cup, the competition where he qualified for the Games.
Great Britain’s Adam Peaty set a new World Record in the final heat of the event in 57.55 seconds to go into tonight’s semi-finals as the fastest qualifier.
Quinn returns to the pool on Tuesday for his main event, the 200m Breaststroke.
Tomorrow, Shane Ryan and Fiona Doyle will take to the pool for their main events. Doyle will be first up in the 100m Breaststroke, then Ryan in the 100m Backstroke.
Doyle has a best time of 1:07.15 in her event, which won her Bronze at the World University Games in 2015. Ryan’s best time is 53.84 from the US Championships in 2013.
Speaking this week, Doyle commented “I’m nervous, but confident, I’d be worried if I wasn’t nervous! The Olympic pool is really nice and it feels great to swim in it. We’ve had some great training in Uberlandia and herein Rio and I’m feeling really good about my race”.
Shane Ryan was also in positive form this week “We had a really great week training in Uberlandia, it was weird at first training at night but we’ve got used to that. The Olympic village is everything you would hope, the pool is fast but there are a lot of people! I’m excited to just get in and race.”
