An outstanding swim from Ireland’s Shane Ryan sees him advance from today’s heats of the 100m Backstroke to tonight’s semi-final at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in a new Irish Record.
Swimming in heat 3, lane 1, Ryan touched 2nd at the halfway mark. The 22 year old held strong for the final 50 metres to touch in 4th place and progress in 14th overall. Ryan’s time of 53.85 was just one hundredth of a second off his best ever time of 53.84 from the US Nationals in 2013. The Irish Record had stood at 54.21 from the European Championships in May of this year.
Ireland’s last semi-finalist in swimming at the Olympic Games was Andrew Bree in Beijing in 2008 when he made the 200m Breaststroke semi-final.
France’s Camille Lacourt is the fastest qualifier for tonight’s semi-final in 52.96 seconds.
Ryan returns to the pool for the 100m Backstroke Semi-Final at 3.12am tonight.
Fiona Doyle was left devastated after missing out on the 100m Breaststroke semi-final, also today. Doyle swam her second fastest time ever and fastest time this year in the event touching 8th in her heat in 1:07.58, but an extremely fast field saw her placed 20th overall and just .26 of a second shy of the semi-final. Doyle will return to the pool on Wednesday for the 200m Breaststroke.
Fiona Doyle 100m Breaststroke 1:07.58 (20th)
