Swim a Mile for Paddy

Pádraig (Paddy) Schäler (former member of CRC and Westwood CRC) was knocked off his bicycle as he cycled to work on Cape Cod on Thursday, 27 June 2013. He has remained in a coma ever since. He had just finished his undergraduate studies in Trinity College and had planned to spend the summer on a J1 working visa in the US while considering which of his many plans for the future he should pursue.

After a few weeks in Cape Cod Hospital, his family brought him home to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital. Four months later, they decided to move him to a dedicated early neuro-rehab facility in Hamburg, Germany.

We at Dublin University Swimming Club are hosting a fundraising swim on Sunday, March 2nd 2014 for Paddy. As many of you know Paddy was a keen and dedicated swimmer throughout his youth. Just last year he was one of Trinity’s best performers at Intervarsities, taking home two gold medals and being selected for the Irish Team at Celtic Nations. The Facebook event for the swim can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/214525945413186/

This swim is open to all standard of swimmers and we could like any and all of you to be involved! This event will help to raise money for Paddy’s continued care and rehabilitation in Hamburg.

We are asking participants to ‘Swim a mile for Paddy’ (a mile is just about 1600m or 64 lengths of the pool in Trinity). This is as a representation of how far Paddy as come since his accident. Participants can take part swimming solo for the mile or as part of a relay team and break the distance up between themselves. The cost of entry is €15 per person and 100% of this money is going towards Paddy’s care!
Trinity College Sports Centre has given us 3 lanes during opening hours 10am – 4pm. In order to run this event smoothly we have set up a Doodle account which limits the amount of people in the pool in 30minute blocks. If you plan to take part in this event please fill in your name on the Doodle link below for a time slot of your choice!

Make sure you bring togs, hat, and googles and arrive 15 minutes before your chosen time slot to register.

Looking forward to seeing all of you there!
