The Swim Ireland National Squads Programme commenced its 2013-2014 swimming season with an Orientation Day on September 28th 2013.
All National Squad swimmers, their parents, club coaches, and training base coaches, were invited to attend the day, held in Dublin at the National Aquatic Centre and the Carlton Hotel.
The day saw a fantastic turnout of 60 athletes and 20 coaches. A number of athletes who are based oversees were unable to attend the day due to the commencement of their university semester but had agreed this in advance with the National Performance Director.
The Senior Squad began the day in the National Aquatic Centre with a pool session led by Paul Donovan and assisted by Nelson Lindsay, Sebastien Locteau, Peter O Brien, and Fran Ronan.
Both the Youth and Junior Squad attended a Mobility and Injury Prevention Workshop led by Sarah Jane McDonnell (IIS) and Noel Murphy (NAC PC).
A number of workshops were held throughout the day by the team at Metrifit, the online training system, to educate swimmers, coaches, and parents of each squad on how to use the system and its purpose. This season will see the introduction of mandatory compliance with the Metrifit system for each athlete on the National Squads Programme, enabling coach and swimmer to accurately reflect and track the swimmer’s progress throughout the year.
Each National Squad met as a team with their Squad Head Coach and their Performance Managers to run through the plan for the season and the goals of the programme.
Prior to the camp an information pack was sent to the athletes containing a Goal Setting Form that required completion by the swimmer and their coach. Based on this form a Performance Meeting will take place with the swimmer, coach, Performance Manager and National Squad Head Coach within the next 3 months.
An Anti-Doping presentation was given to the National Senior Squad by the Swim Ireland Anti-Doping Officer, Niamh O Sullivan, which covered topics such as Therapeutic Use Exemption Forms, Doping Violations, and Registered Testing Pool requirements.
All National Squad Athletes are required to complete the Irish Sports Council Real Winner
Headshots were then taken of all the National Squad Athletes by Sportsfile and can be found at http://www.sportsfile.com/search/Swimming/#
