‘BREASTSTROKE FOR BREAST HEALTH DAY’ FOR LOCAL POOLS
EUROPA DONNA IRELAND AND SWIM IRELAND TEAM UP TO MARK EUROPEAN BREAST HEALTH DAY
Thursday 3rd October 2013 – Europa Donna Ireland, the breast cancer advocacy group, today joined Swim Ireland to encourage people to host a ‘Breast Stroke for Breast Health Day’ event in their local pool with
Breast Health Day, a European event that falls annually on the 15th of October, and each year Europa Donna Ireland hosts events nationwide as part of their campaign to make people more breast aware.
Speaking at the announcement today, Dympna Watson, Chair of Europa Donna Ireland said: “This year’s campaign continues to encourage girls, women and men around Ireland to commit to pursuing a healthy and balanced lifestyle that can really make a difference in their breast health. Scientific studies are highlighting a link between healthy lifestyle choices and a lower risk of developing breast cancer. Simple lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity, eating a balanced diet and avoiding weight gain can help prevent breast cancer cases. Today we are asking people to organise a ‘Breast Stroke for Breast Health Day’ event at local pools as part of the campaign to make people more aware of their breast health and the link between exercise and being healthy.”
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Europe, including Ireland. The idea behind the ‘Breaststroke for Breast Health Day’ initiative is simple. All people have to do is block off a lane in their local pool and encourage people to swim breaststroke on one day during the month of October.”
Encouraging people to take part in an event during October, Sarah Keane, CEO Swim Ireland said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Europa Donna Ireland again this year to promote the adoption of a healthy lifestyle through swimming in support of Breast Health Day. Encouraging healthy activity is important in order to maintain overall well-being as well as breast health and I urge people to take part in an event during October.”
