Swim Ireland Coaches will build on the knowledge and skills provided by Swim Ireland Teachers.

Responsibilities will include further cultivating and refining performance in the respective aquatic discipline.

This includes non-competitive, competitive and elite performance in line with Long Term Athlete Development.

Course Information

Level 1 Assistant Coaching Swimming

This course is designed to introduce the knowledge, skills and practices for the safe, ethical and effective support of coaching sessions.


Course Content

  • The role of the assistant coach
  • Physical literacy in swimming
  • Competitive swimming skills
  • Types of training used to develop swimmers
  • How to deliver pre-planned coaching sessions
  • How to carry out reflective practices of your coaching


Prerequisites

  • Minimum age to attend this courses is 15 years old
  • Active NVB Vetting/ Access NI (16 years +)
  • Safeguarding Level 1

Level 2 Coaching Swimming

This course builds on the knowledge, skills and practices developed at Level 1 and will introduce additional further principles surrounding sport science in relation to the aquatic environment.

Level 3 Coaching Swimming

The Level 3 Coaching qualification will ensure coaches have the skills to work with competitive and elite performers in line with Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) across all elements of water based and land based training activities.

Attendees will also develop the skills to identify when athletes require additional input from support professionals and how to access this.


Course Content

  • Planning, preparing and delivering long-term coaching plans
  • Evaluating effectiveness plans in practice
  • Managing a coaching programme
  • How to lead a team of Level 1 Assistant Coaches and Level 2 Coaches
  • developing and adapting coaching style to implement effective coaching practices
  • Implementing elements of nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning, biomechanics and physiology into long-term plans within a club environment

  • Minimum age to attend this course is 18 years old
  • Candidates must hold Level 2 Coaching qualification
  • Active NVB Vetting/ Access NI
  • Safeguarding Level 1

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is an essential element of being a successful Swimming Coach. It is vital to keep up to date with the most current practices and thinking in relation to swimming and aquatics.

CPD helps with career progression and advancement, broadening your knowledge and equipping you with the skills to specialise in specific areas.

It also provides confidence and credibility by ensuring the professional standard of Swim Ireland qualifications are at a consistently high level.

Licensing

Licensing helps raise, maintain and regulate standards of practice and help professionalise certain aspects and areas within the aquatics.

It also helps Swim Ireland reward and recognise those working within swimming, both as volunteers and paid professionals, for their achievement of qualifications.

Licensing is renewed annually and the following are required to maintain a coach license:

  • Swim Ireland Associate or Club Membership
  • Read and accept the Teacher/Coach Code of Conduct on the Swim Ireland Membership Database
  • A passport sized ID photograph uploaded to the membership profile on the Swim Ireland Database
  • Vetting through Swim Ireland or Swim Ulster for Access NI (depending on the jurisdiction of where you are operating)
  • Sport Ireland/Sport NI Safeguarding Level 1
  • 6 CPD points
