What is Skillnet?

The Leisure, Health and Fitness Skillnet network provides training specific to the industry in collaboration with Ireland Active. Swim Ireland is an approved training provider delivering training at discounted rates to Ireland Active members.

Swim Ireland are keen to support the recruitment and development of swimming teachers and lifeguards within their leisure industry and we encourage facilities to engage with Skillnet training opportunities.

What courses can I do?

Swim Ireland offer the following training opportunities through Skillnet (pending approval):

Am I eligible?

Facilities can seek approval for employee training by completing a trainee application form and indicating which course they are interested in. The application will be reviewed by Skillnet and passed on to Swim Ireland.

Learn to Swim Partners receive a number of pre-approved places each year on Swim Ireland courses. To avail of these places you need to complete a short application form.

How do I get Skillnet funding?

To receive Skillnet funding your facility must be Ireland Active members. You will then complete the online application to seek funding approval for the required qualification.

Is funding guaranteed?

No, your application will be considered based on funding amount available and previous funding received.

How do I achieve the Level 1 Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification?

To receive your qualification, you will need to follow our three-step process:

  • eLearning module – self guided learning, takes approx. 8 hours to complete
  • Virtual classroom – these are live classroom sessions run over several evenings/ weekend days. Candidates would sign up for a block of these, i.e., you can’t pick and choose between different courses. You can see dates available on our website.
  • Practical – held in swimming pools, You can see dates available on our website.

You will also require Garda Vetting/Access NI through Swim Ireland and an active safeguarding credential to attend the course practical.

How do I achieve the Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification?

To receive your qualification, you will need to follow our three-step process:

  • Virtual classroom – these are live classroom sessions run over several evenings/ weekend days. Candidates would sign up for a block of these, i.e., you can’t pick and choose between different courses. You can see dates available on our website.

I have garda vetting through my facility, will this be sufficient?

To attend a Swim Ireland course you must complete vetting through Swim Ireland. This is a legal requirement and compulsory for attendance at a course practical.
