Women in Sport Coaching & Mentoring Programme

Women in Sport Coaching & Mentoring Programme

In-line with the Federation of Irish Sports’ 20x20 Campaign, Swim Ireland are committed to increasing the number of female coaches in swimming and water polo within Ireland by 20% by the year 2020.  As a predominantly 50/50 organisation in most areas, coaching (in swimming & water polo) is one area where there is a clear gender gap.

We will be achieving this target via Swim Irelands’ Women in Sport (WIS) Coach Mentoring Programme for swimming and water polo.

The first phase of this took place last week (23rd – 26th October) with 9 female coaches taking on a Level 1 Coaching Swimming Course.

The course was run over four days at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus. The difference between this course and our standard Level 1 Coaching qualification is the added benefit of mentoring once the course units are successfully completed. The mentoring element involves candidates being paired with an experienced female coach in their local area for mentorship until they are ready to move on to Level 2. The course is also offered at a discounted rate of €125 (normally €325) with the support of Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport Grant.

Coaches who complete the Level 1 will then be invited to apply to complete a Level 2 qualification in 2019/20, with our first course due to commence in April 2019. Level 3 Coach (Swimming) courses will also be made available through the programme.

All candidates/coaches from the programme are also invited to attend any of our WIS events e.g. #WePlay Inspiring Girls in Sport Conference.
