Relay Advance to Medley Final

July 07, 2018

Irish swimmers had their most impressive day yet as the European Junior Swimming Championships continued in Helsinki today. Jack McMillan, Niamh Coyne, Rebecca Reid and Maria Godden are all through to Semi-Finals with Coyne also part of Ireland’s Mixed Medley Relay Team who have progressed to this evening’s Final.

Jack McMillan had the swim of his life in the 200m Freestyle this morning. The 18-year-old broke his own Irish Junior Record in 1:49.57, touching second in his heat and progressing to the semi-final in second place overall. McMillan was one of only three swimmers under 1 minute 50 seconds in the heats with Great Britain’s Dean Thomas posting the fastest time in 1:48.87.

National Centre Dublin’s Niamh Coyne is also second through to her semi-final after a fantastic swim in the 100m Breaststroke saw her win her heat in 1:09.14, just off her best time of 1:08.90.

Rebecca Reid, who made yesterday’s 50m Backstroke semi-final, continued her good form with another personal best swim in the 200m Individual Medley where she advances in eight-place overall in a time of 2:18.42. Banbridge’s Julia Knox (2:20.24) was unlucky to miss out on the semi final by just one hundredth of a second and will be first reserve for the semi-final while Amelia Kane, also competing in the event, swam a two second personal best touching in 2:22.30.

Maria Godden got the morning off to a great start in the 100m Backstroke heats. Swimming at her first European Junior Championships, Godden clocked 1:03.77 to make her second semi-final this week.

Day four of the championships concluded with Ireland’s Mixed Medley Relay of Coyne, Paddy Johnston (Backstroke), Ellen Walshe (Butterfly) and Robbie Powell (Freestyle) battling to second in their heat and eight overall to make tonight’s Final.

Also in action today, Ellen Cassidy and Finn McGeever concluded their Championships with 1:07.66 in the 100m Backstroke and 1:54.04 in the 200m Freestyle respectively.
