After 130 days out of the pool, some of our Division and ‘A’ swimmers returned to the water and to what they love to do best - swim!

Like many clubs our training came to an abrupt end on March 12th, so when we decided to return to the water in July, albeit in small numbers, it was a joyous occasion for the Ballina Dolphins Committee, Coaches and Swimmers.

Although sessions are a little unfamiliar, our swimmers have not wasted any time in adapting to the new normal. The club plans to introduce more swimmers gradually over the coming weeks. We are loving our much missed perfume, chlorine!

While the pools were closed the club engaged with its swimmers on its Social Media platforms. We began by reversing the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. By decorating our houses, we entertained those who walked past.

Our swimmers were telling us how much they were missing the pool, their training sessions, and their friends, so we asked them to send in swimming memories that made them smile and we shared the memories and the smiles. We loved reading the memories from our Learn to Swim members right up to our Division Swimmers.

We were always preparing for our return to water and this involved Yoga classes via Zoom. The Club was also very grateful to Mona McSharry, who took some time out to have a Zoom call with some of our swimmers. It was great to hear Mona inspire and motivate the squad. Thank you to Swim Ireland for facilitating this memorable experience!

Our dry-land training continued in the background and, during May the club took on the Swim Ireland 21-Day Challenge. This saw swimmers complete a 20-minute circuit every day for 21 days. Ballina Dolphins were thrilled when it was announced in July that we had won the challenge. Teamwork makes the dream work!

We are very fortunate to be based in the West of Ireland, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Many of our eager swimmers took the opportunity to dip their toes back in the water through Open Water Programs that have been on offer in the area, as they awaited the much anticipated return to the pool.

Like many other Clubs the lead up to our return to water has been a very busy time for our committee and we are very grateful to the time and dedication that has been put into organising and facilitating our Club’s return to water.

Ballina Dolphins Swimming Club are delighted to be back in the water and look forward to the coming swimming season!
