National Centre Dublin’s Niamh Coyne and Kilkenny’s Maria Godden highlighted the opening morning for Ireland at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Helsinki, Finland. 

Coyne got proceedings underway for team Ireland in the 50m Breaststroke, touching third in her heat the 17-year-old swam a best time of 32.08 to progress through to this evening’s semi-final in 8th place. 

200m Backstroke Irish Junior Record holder Maria Godden has also confirmed a semi-final place this evening. Making her European Junior Championships debut, Godden advanced 14th overall from the preliminaries in 2:16.93.

Coyne will be back in action at 3pm (Ireland) with the top eight progressing to this evening’s final at 4.40pm, while Godden will take to the pool for her semi-final at 4.10pm.

Victoria Catterson made an impressive debut in the 100m Freestyle this morning, swimming a lifetime best 57.68, the Ards swimmer took half a second off her previous best of 58.15.

In the 50m Butterfly Robbie Powell clocked 25.60 ahead of his main event, the 100m Freestyle tomorrow, while Ellen Walshe clocked 2:23.07 in the 200m Butterfly.

Finn McGeever (400m Freestyle), Paddy Johnston (100m Backstroke), Amelia Kane (400m IM) and Ellen Cassidy (200m Backstroke) all made impressive European Junior Championships debuts this morning.
