Following a personal best swim in this morning’s heats National Centre Dublin’s Niamh Coyne advanced from this evening’s 50m Breaststroke Semi-Final to compete in her first European Juniors Final. Coyne dipped under the 32 second mark in the event for the first time in the semi-final, clocking 31.81 and securing her place in the Final. 

In the Final the 17-year old went under her previous best for the third time today touching in 32.14 for 8th place overall. Great Britain’s Tatiana Belonogoff won the Gold medal in the event in 31.29 with Germany’s Anna Elendt second (31.36) and Slovakia’s Tina Celik completing the podium in 31.57.

Also in semi-final action this evening, Maria Godden of Kilkenny bettered her preliminary time of 2:16.93, touching in 2:16.15. Irish Junior Record holder in the event, Godden moved from 14th in heats to 13th overall in her first International semi-final.

Day two in Helsinki will see Coyne return to the pool for the 200m Breaststroke Heats. In the 100m Freestyle Robbie Powell and Jack McMillan will compete with Victoria Catterson returning for the 400m Freestyle. Finn McGeever swims the 200m Butterfly and Cadan McCarthy in the 200IM and Alfie Kelly in the 1500m Freestyle will both make their European Junior Championship debuts. The morning will conclude with Ireland represented in the 400m Mixed Freestyle Relay.
