Ireland’s Niamh Coyne has cruised into the 100m Breaststroke Final on the penultimate day of racing at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Helsinki, Finland. 

Coyne, who swims at Swim Ireland’s National Centre in Dublin, progressed from this morning’s heats in second place in 1:09.14, just two tenth’s of a second off her best time of 1:08.90. The 17-year-old maintained that place to progress to tomorrow’s Final, winning the first semi-final in a lifetime best of 1:08.56.

Russia’s Anastasia Makarova posted the fastest time in the semi-finals in 1:08.46 with Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterakova third in 1:08.59. 

It was a busy day for Coyne as she was also part of Ireland’s Mixed Medley Relay who swam tonight’s Final. The team of Coyne, Paddy Johnston, Ellen Walshe and Robbie Powell finished second in their heat this morning, progressing in eighth overall. The quartet then bettered their time to 3:58.71, which saw them remain in eighth place. 

Jack McMillan was also in impressive form in Helsinki today as he set a new Irish Junior Record in the 200m Freestyle heats advancing to the semi-finals in 1:49.57. The Bangor swimmer went on to clock 1:49.89 in the semi-final to place 10th overall. 

Rebecca Reid secured her second semi-final place in as many days in the 200m Individual Medley. Reid swam a lifetime best 2:18.42 this morning, matching it in the semi-final in 2:18.50 to finish 12th overall. 

Maria Godden was also swimming her second semi-final this week when she went in the 100m Backstroke after a swim of 1:03.77 in the heats. Godden moved from 14th to 9th in the rankings with a personal best swim of 1:02.87. 

In action tomorrow morning, Robbie Powell and McMillan compete in the 50m Freestyle, Walshe in the 50m Butterfly, Cadan McCarthy and Alfie Kelly in the 400m Individual Medley and Ireland’s Women race the 4x200m Freestyle Relay heats.
