25th place finish for Oliver Dingley in Men’s 3m springboard at Tokyo 2020

August 02, 2021

Monday morning saw the first of Ireland’s divers take to the Tokyo 2020 boards, with Oliver Dingley competing in the Men’s 3m Springboard event.

Having finished 8th in Rio in 2016, Dingley continued to make history by becoming the first diver to represent Ireland at two Olympic Games.

A total of 29 divers contested for 18 semi-final spots in a challenging morning of diving that saw Rio 2016 Bronze medallist Patrick Haudsing miss out on qualification. Dingley finished in 25th position following his six dives.

Speaking to RTE , Dingley said “It’s been a challenging process, a five-year cycle, there’s definitely been points where I’ve had to pull myself out of the hole to get there onto that diving board for my one chance to qualify for the Olympics, which was my first competition in 18 months.

"This is only my third competition in two years so there’s many, many positives to take, some disappointments, there’ll be some stuff I’m kicking myself for but at the same time I’m proud to be part of Team Ireland.”

Tanya Watson, Ireland’s first female Olympic diver, will feature in the Women’s 10m platform on Wednesday morning at 7am Irish time.
