Conor Ferguson has secured a place in tonight’s 50m Backstroke Semi-Final and the records continued to tumble in Copenhagen on the final day of racing at the European Short Course Swimming Championships.
In the Men’s 50m Backstroke heats Conor Ferguson claimed back the record that Jordan Sloan had set on this day in 2016 at the World Championships in Canada. Ferguson, who was Ireland’s first ever medallist at the World Junior Championships in August, claimed another piece of history today as he became the first Irishman to break 24 seconds in the event, qualifying for tonight’s semi-final in 23.97, 14th overall.
Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov set a new World and European Junior Record of 23.10 in the heats to progress as the fastest qualifier to the semi-finals.
This 50m Backstroke Semi-Finals take place at 4.08pm (Ireland).
Danielle Hill cemented her place at the fastest Irishwoman in history, the Larne swimmer lowering the 50m Freestyle Irish record in this morning’s heats. Hill clocked an impressive 25.49 to finish second in her heat, knocking .03 of a second off the previous record of 25.52 set by Erin Riordan of UCD in Scotland last week.
Jordan Sloan (Backstroke), Alex Murphy (Breaststroke), Conor Brines (Butterfly) and Calum Bain (Freestyle) combined for the 200m Medley Relay for the final record of the morning. The quartet smashed the Irish Senior Record by over three seconds touching in 1:35.63, the previous record had stood at 1:38.84 from 2009.
Also in action this morning Mona McSharry, last night named RTE Sport’s inaugural Young Sportsperson of the Year, ended a tremendous year with a 2:25.66 swim in the 200m Breaststroke. Jordan Sloan clocked 24.48 in the 50m Backstroke and Brendan Hyland 1:57.60 in the 200m Butterfly.
