Irish swimmers had an outstanding morning in the pool at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea with both Darragh Greene and Brendan Hyland advancing to semi-finals in Irish Record times.

Greene, who set a national record and went under the Olympic Qualification time in the 100m Breaststroke on Sunday, was first up in the 50m Breaststroke. The 23-year-old blitzed Barry Murphy’s 2009 Irish Senior Record (27.26) and now owns all three Men’s Irish Breaststroke Records. Greene’s time of 26.94, put him 4th in his heat and 8th overall for this afternoon’s 12.41pm (Ireland) semi-final. The Longford man can now add the first Irishman under 27 seconds in the event to being the first to break the minute barrier in the 100m event.

‘I feel really good, it was kind of a perfect race, I’m looking forward to this evening’ Greene commented ‘I really wanted to get back for a night swim, especially just missing out by one place (in the 100m Breaststroke), so yeah I was really fired up for it.’

Brendan Hyland made his first appearance at the championships and had the swim of his life in the 200m Butterfly. A new Irish Record of 1:57.09 secured him a place in the semi-finals in 14th place overall. Hyland knocked .12 off the record he had set at the Irish Open in March.

The National Centre Dublin swimmer is edging closer to the Olympic Qualification Time of 1:56.48 and is relishing the opportunity to go after it tonight ‘I’m excited, it felt good and I’ll give it whack tonight. I’m delighted to make it back, World championships is a big deal , to get another chance tonight, in front of the big crowd, I was a little bit cautious there, its always a bit like that in your first race, you don’t know how much you have in you, but I felt fine finishing that and I’ll get out there strong tonight and see what I’ve got.’

Hyland’s 200m Butterfly Semi-Final will take place at 1.47pm (Ireland).
