Day 4 in Kranj, Slovenia saw a smaller number of swimmers taking to the pool with eleven swimmers competing in two individual and 1 relay event.
First up was Trojan SC’s Helena MCGrath (45-49) in the women’s 200m IM, improving her time and placing to finish 8th in a time of 2:49.37.
There were four Irish men in action in the 200m IM; Duncan Russell, Kilkenny SC; Vivian Mongey, Aer Lingus Masters; John Cunningham, Limerick Masters and Mike O’Connell, Kingdom Masters. Mongey finished best of the Irish with a 7th place in the 55-59 age group, Russell placing 27th in the same age group. Cunningham took 14th in the 45-49 age group with O’Connell rounding out the group with 21st in the 35-39 age group.
In the women’s 400m freestyle Dymphna Morris continued her fine form storming her way to the top of the podium for gold medal number three. Charlotte Reid (Aer Lingus Masters), Brenda Healy (Marlins) and Roisin O’Brien (Kilkenny SC) competed in the 35-39 age group finishing 9th,15th and 22nd respectively. Comans swimmer Arlene Mc Guinness placed 13th in the 40-44 age group.
The men’s 400m freestyle saw Boyd Freeman (Aer Lingus Masters) and Mike O’Connell (Kingdom Masters) in action. Freeman placed 8th in the 55-59 age group while O’Connell improved on his entry time by 5 seconds to finish 10th in the 35-39 age group.
The last event of the day featured the Aer Lingus Masters men’s team of Peter Conway, Boyd Freeman, Declan O’Sullivan and Vivian Mongey who competed in the 4x50m freestyle, 200-239 age group. The team finished 4th overall in 1:53.98, just 2 seconds outside the Irish record which has stood for 10 years.
Day 5 events on Thursday 6th September include 200m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and the 4x50m mixed freestyle relay.
