Cork swimming stalwart Mary Haughney will receive nationwide recognition for her dedicated work with Sundays Well Swimming Club this week, as she has been awarded the Cork award at the virtual 2020 Federation of Irish Sport Volunteers in Sport awards, proudly supported by EBS Mortgage Masters.
Without people like Mary, swimming in her local area could not exist. Mary will put herself forward for any voluntary role and is always on the phone to offer support and advice.
Asked recently as part of a Swim Ireland Women in Sport series feature if she could officiate at one last event what would it be, Mary responded: “People will probably expect me to say the Olympics, which would be nice, but if I only had one more opportunity to officiate it would have to be at an Irish Open/Olympic Trials.
"We have such a talented group of swimmers and it is just wonderful to see them achieve their goals."
Mary knows all Ireland's top swimmers and their achievements, and there is nothing that makes her happier than being on deck watching Irish swimmers compete at their best.
Mary has given so much to the sport in the past 15 years, from the first tentative step as a timekeeper, to working as an international official at the highest level. She is one in a million and extremely deserving of this award and will be honoured this week at the special virtual awards ceremony.
The awards will be streamed live from 7pm across three evenings this week on the Federation of Irish Sport’s Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/federationofirishsport/

About Volunteers in Sport Awards 2020
The Volunteers in Sport Awards were created to champion the contribution, commitment and dedication of the army of 450,000 volunteers across the country who go above and beyond by giving their time to Irish sport and physical activity each year.
These volunteers dedicate some 37.2 million hours of volunteering across the country’s 13,000+ sports clubs and associations every year.
Towards the end of 2020, members of the public, as well as sports clubs and governing bodies were invited to nominate an individual whose contributions to sport has made a real difference to their community, club or county.
The nominations and award recipients were selected by a judging panel consisting of 11 individuals drawn from sports administration, the volunteer community and media, including former Director General of the GAA, Paraic Duffy, RTÉ broadcaster, Marie Crowe and CEO of CARA, Niamh Daffy.
