McCullagh International Preview

Swim Ireland and Swim Ulster will welcome over 450 swimmers from nearly 80 clubs to the Bangor Aurora Swimming Complex in Co. Down for an action packed three days of racing at the McCullagh International, taking place from Friday, 24th – Sunday, 26th February.

The McCullagh International will provide a fantastic opportunity for many of the athletes to compete in a major long course competition for the first time in 2023, which has attracted some of Ireland’s top swimmers, as Tokyo Olympians, Darragh Greene, Shane Ryan, Finn McGeever, Danielle Hill, and Ellen Walshe will feature over the course of the weekend.

The three-day meet will provide Irish swimmers and clubs an opportunity to battle it out for national relay titles and will also serve as a key racing opportunity before the Irish Open in April (1st-5th) in the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre.

Also taking place this weekend is the BUCS National Long Course Championships in Sheffield, England with a number of Irish swimmers competing, including current 800m European Record Short Course holder Daniel Wiffen, Conor Ferguson and Uiseann Cooke will also be in action over the weekend.

Speaking ahead of the McCullagh International, Swim Ireland National Performance Director Jon Rudd said: “The McCullagh International always provides a great racing opportunity leading into our April Trials and it’s always a pleasure to race in Bangor Aurora against international opposition. We will start to see how our athletes are shaping-up with a big summer of international racing ahead, as well as our newly formulated Summer National Championships to come. Racing unrested is always a challenge, and no one has a need to be rested at this meet – so it will be the head-to-head battles whilst in full training that will provide us with the excitement over the next few days.”
