National Division 2 - Day 2 Report

The second day of competition got underway in UL Arena with the first medals awarded in the Women’s 1500m Freestyle to Ines SCOTT (Alliance) 20.47.11, Rachel FISHMAN (Trojan) 18.44.74, Shauna BOWE (New Ross) 19.44.13, Orlaith DOWLING (Trojan) 20.46.36, and Maia O’LOUGHLIN BROPHY (Coolmine) 20.17.17.

Kingdom SC took gold in the Boys 13-14 yrs 200m Freestyle Relay (2.00.69), in the afternoon.

The freestylers showed up again today. It’s a second gold of the competition for Ella POWELL (28.7), Riley Brown (27.83), Billy Anglim (28.83) and Sean ALFRED (26.16) in the 50m Freestyle, after claiming it yesterday in the 200m Freestyle.

18-year-old Aislinn CALLERY, from Clonmel, was the only girl going under 28 seconds. She claimed her first gold taking .54 seconds off her heat time touching in at 27.82.

In the Girls 100m Butterfly Eimear O’NEILL (Cookstown), Liadh BOAG (Mallow), Alainn HENDERSON (Alliance), Amy HAWE (Fermoy), and Aoife LYONS (Celtics Waves) comfortably took gold in each of their age groups. The 16 years-old Celtics Waves swimmer impressed with her swim (1.09.60), the only swimmer going under 70 seconds.

The 17yrs & Over Final was close; Maria MARYNTSEVA (1.10.05), a Ukrainian refugee who won a silver medal at the 2019 FINA World Youth Artistic Swimming Championships in 2019, won gold closely followed by Alison HYLAND (1.10.82).

Baltazar ALLENDE (1.09.45) and Jack Hutchinson (1.06.50) claimed their second medal of the competition in the 100m Butterfly. It is a third medal for Scott Moss from Alliance (1.14.80) who came first. Kevin MCNALLY (1.10.29), Oisin WARD (1.03.70) and David Clenaghan (1.02.98) claimed their first gold.

In the Girls 200m Breaststroke, winners were ahead of the pack. Gracie MCNEILL (3.06.82) and Nicole COLFER (3.02.49) won their second medal of the competition easily. Gracie, in the 12 yrs category, was 2.24 seconds ahead of Neysa CONNOLY; and Nicole was 5.25 seconds ahead 14-year-old Alainn HENDERSON. In the same event, Annie POOTS (2.59.70) and Abby BYRNE (2.51.66) claimed their second gold medals.

Boys 200m Breaststroke offered us 2 tight races. 14-years-old Senan MCWEENEY (3.00.20) and Bobby RACKARD (3.00.75) were .55 of a second off each other. There was similar excitement with the 17 & Overs as Joseph KENNY took gold in 2.42.38, followed closely by Diarmuid BLACKWELL who touched the wall in 2.42.42.

Riley BROWN (2.53.34) took his third gold medal, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead his closest opponent Eoin CONNERY.

Tadhg WALSH (2.39.00) added another medal to his tally and won his second gold of the competition in the 16 yrs category. Sean MURPHY (3.05.20) also won his second medal, finishing first in the 13 yrs category.

The final event of the day did not disappoint the supporters in the stands. The Mixed 15/Over 200m Mixed Medley Relay showed great excitement with Clonmel taking the gold medal again in 2.02.06, after being crowned yesterday in the 200m Freestyle Relay.
