March 15, 2021

Swim Ireland have launched a new scholarship programme for teenagers, funded by Sport Ireland, to allow them to complete selected aquatic coaching courses supported by a mentoring programme and discounted fees.

Research has shown us that teenagers are most at risk of leaving aquatic clubs as a result of the long shut down of swimming pools, so we have launched the Retain and Retrain Scholarship Programme to help prevent that.

This programme aims to give teenagers the opportunity to utilise the skills and knowledge that they have developed during their time in swimming clubs by qualifying as a Swimming Coach, Water Polo Coach or Open Water Swimming Coach.

Candidates will also complete the CARA Sports Inclusion and Disability Awareness Training Online Workshop.

How Does It Work?

For 2021, scholarship programme places will be available on selected Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses via an application process.

The types of courses available include:

  • Level 1 Assistant Swimming Coach
  • Level 2 Swimming Coach
  • Level 2 Open Water Swimming Coach
  • Level 1 Assistant Water Polo Coach
  • Level 2 Water Polo Coach

Each of these courses will be a blend of online classes, online learning in your own time, and practical elements at the pool - when restrictions allow.

Although the COVID-19 Global Pandemic is affecting practical elements of courses, we have adjusted all our courses so that theory elements can be completed online, followed by practical elements at a later stage.

Applications are now open and will close on May 3, 2021. Any applications received after this date will not be considered and successful applicants will be notified on May 18.

Those candidates will receive a discounted course fee, along with support from a mentor following completion of their course.

Application Timeline

15th March – Applications Open

3rd May – Deadline for Applications/Closing Date

18th May – Successful candidates will be contacted and offered a scholarship

Please note: Scholarship programme candidates do not need to book onto a course manually. If you are successful in your application you will be awarded a place and then instructed to pay the discounted fee to gain access to the online theory element.

Please also note that this Scholarship cannot be applied retrospectively - no refunds will be given for courses already booked. Discounted fees will be confirmed for candidates once all applications have been received and reviewed.
