Further Guidance on Open Water Training

April 30, 2021

If your club is returning to Open Water training, or you are a coach aiming to start training in Open Water, we have prepared clear guides as to what qualifications, safety requirements and COVID-19 protocols you need.

The Open Water Qualification Training Overview tells you what options are open to you, and which training you need to undertake for the activity you intend to supervise.

The Open Water Safe Supervision Guidelines outlines what safety cover and what qualified personnel should be present for Open Water training sessions.

The Outdoor Training Guidance for Clubs is a must-read for all members of a Swim Ireland Club, and details how clubs can safely run outdoor training for members, including COVID-19 protocols.

Any person or any Club returning to Open Water, should first review and absorb our Return to Open Water Tips, and then share them with anyone else who will be involved.

One key point in our guidance is that Clubs need to make sure whoever is coaching or leading an outdoor training session has the required qualification, and that proper risk assessments and safety cover are in place.

Swimming Coaches are not insured to run Open Water Swimming sessions, which is why we are increasing the frequency of our Level 2 Open Water Swimming Coach qualification course AND offering our Recognition of Prior Learning Scheme for just €100 for a limited period.

Water Polo Coaches are also NOT insured to run Open Water sessions, BUT we have launched CPD modules this week that will allow this cohort to safely take to Open Water.
