Swimming lessons permitted to return when swimming pools re-open on 7th June

Swim Ireland are delighted to welcome the news today that Swimming Lessons across Ireland will be permitted to restart when swimming pools reopen on the 7th June.
After months of discussions, submissions and presenting scientific research alongside our partners Ireland Active, Swim Ireland are overjoyed.
Understanding the importance and the urgency of this for the future viability and sustainability of the industry, the sport and the impact on young people across Ireland, the news couldn’t have come at a better time.
Over 400 swimming pools, thousands of aquatic professionals and business owners across the country have patiently awaited this news for over a year will now have an opportunity to reopen their doors and generate much needed income to ensure that the facilities and businesses remain viable and sustainable in the coming months and years.
Swimming lessons will be the only exemption to the individual training rule, acknowledging not only the safe environment that swimming pools provide, but also the robust protocols and guidance provided by Swim Ireland to support the aquatic industry in its return.
CEO Swim Ireland, Sarah Keane, said: “Swimming is such an important life skill and we are all grateful and delighted to be able to get our 500,000 children all over the country back to swimming lessons.
"A massive thanks to the Ministers Martin and Chambers, and Department of Sport, Sport Ireland, our partners Ireland Active and we know the facility operators will have welcomed this announcement with open arms and will adhere to the strictest health and safety protocols."
Head of Swim Ireland Education, Joni Harding, said: “This is the day we have been waiting for, for what feels like forever! We are delighted with the support and acknowledgment from Minister Chambers that swimming pools are safe and are so happy to be sharing this amazing news with all our swim schools, facilities and members this evening.
"We asked to #LetusSwim and now #WewillSwim – such great day for the half a million children in Ireland who have missed out on swimming lessons over the last 5 months.”
