Mona McSharry on Tuesday achieved Ireland’s 17th new Irish Senior Record in Abu Dhabi to earn a spot in the 200m Breaststroke Final at the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships.

This will be the 100m Breaststroke bronze medallist’s third Final at these Championships and means Ireland have three Finals on the last evening of competition.

Taking place at the Etihad Arena, the Championships are world swimming’s finale of 2021 and the culmination of the short course (25m pool) season.

Mona McSharry’s lifetime best in this event in short course format was 2:25.08, with teammate Niamh Coyne holding the Irish Senior Record at 2:22.70.

McSharry broke that on Tuesday morning, posting 2:21.59 to finish third in her heat and joint seventh overall.

That is the seventh new Irish Senior Record she has set at these Championships and she now holds eight Irish Senior Records across long course (50m) and short course (25m) pools.

The 200m Breaststroke Final takes place at 14:41 Irish time. Tuesday afternoon also features Daniel Wiffen in the 1500m Freestyle Final and Jack McMillan in the 100m Freestyle Final.

This is the last day of competition. All the action can be followed via fina.org.
