Training Midlife Women
October 11, 2021
Swim Ireland, Athletics Ireland, Triathlon Ireland and Cycling Ireland are collaborating together to provide a first of its kind coaching certificate in partnership with The Well-HQ.
The aim of the programme is to provide coaches and teachers with the knowledge, expertise and support they need to train midlife women properly, ensuring longevity in our sports. This course is about women but not for women - male and female candidates are encouraged to apply!
The “Training Midlife Women" Certificate is delivered by The Well HQ, who are dedicated to all women and those who support them, from puberty to menopause. They work to educate and empower women, so they can become active and use exercise as one of the solutions to help alleviate symptoms of female health issues.
The course content will focus on women who are active and want to do more, but may not know how, right up to the elite level seeking to enhance their performance. The Well has the knowledge and the expertise to empower women to thrive in their sport, health and life. Dr Bella, Dr Emma and Baz are skilled at bursting taboos and normalising conversations in language that everyone can understand.
Menopause is something that will impact a female’s life at some point. It is important that we raise awareness to the topic and provide training to our male and female coaches so they can support females in aquatic sports.
The Menopause is a known barrier to taking part in physical activity and exercise for many women, when in fact both can be utilised as excellent coping strategies in the management of menopausal symptoms and increasing a woman’s quality of life.
Nora Stapleton, Sport Ireland Women in Sport Lead added, “The work being carried out by Sport Ireland under its Policy on Women in Sport crosses over many topics, with supporting and increasing physical activity in women and girls a key target area. Sport Ireland have identified a need for better knowledge, research and support for midlife women when it comes to exercise and so we welcome the collaboration from the four sports in creating this programme for coaches"
Co-Founder of The Well Baz Moffat says “this project is just the start of some exciting work going on in Ireland right now focusing on supporting girls and women to do more sport and exercise. The midlife woman is often ignored in many settings. I am really looking forward to working with these coaches to help them understand this inevitable life stage and give them an evidence-based approach to working with midlife women, which they can use in their clubs straight away”
Limited spaces are available onto the course and will be awarded via an application process. Successful candidates from all four sports will come together to learn from Doctor’s, Exercise Physiologists, Coaches and Nutritionists from The Well to understand how best to support women through this life stage.
Swim Ireland are using Sport Ireland WIS funding to heavily subsidise the cost of this course to just €70 (usually costing €470) for successful candidates.
Swim Ireland members will receive 6 CPD points upon successful completion of the course.
