
With the big guns competing in Abu Dhabi at the World Short Course Championships the opportunity was ripe for the younger athletes to take centre stage this week in Dublin.
Relishing the opportunity, swimmers like Uiseann Cooke (Tuam SC), Ellie McCartney (Ards SC), Grace Davison (Ards SC), Evan Bailey (New Ross SC), Danny Morgan (Coolmine SC), Daniel Kennedy (Ards SC), Lottie Cullen (Swim Belfast SC) and Jena MacDougald (UCD SC) featured prominently on the podium over the three-day competition.

Tuam swimmer Uiseann Cooke and Ards’ Ellie McCartney completed their clean sweep of the Breaststroke events by winning gold in the 200m Breaststroke on Saturday evening. Cooke picked up bronze in the 100m Butterfly whilst McCartney closed an exceptional meet by claiming her fourth gold of the meet in the 200m Individual Medley.
Evan Bailey (New Ross SC) continued his impressive form by adding bronze in the 200m Individual Medley to his collection and putting in a sensational swim in the 100m Butterfly to win gold in 53.72, just 0.17 off the Irish Junior record.
Ards swimmer Daniel Kennedy and Coolmine’s Danny Morgan battled it out in the 400m Freestyle in an exciting event towards the end of the evening with Kennedy edging out Morgan over the final 50m to win gold in 3:56.25 and Morgan silver in 3:56.71.
Lottie Cullen (Swim Belfast SC) and Jena MacDougald (UCD SC) battled with Kilkenny’s Maria Godden in the Backstroke events throughout the competition. Godden reigned supreme in the 200m Backstroke, with Cullen taking silver and MacDougald bronze. Godden and MacDougald took home another bronze medal each in the 50m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley respectively.
Victoria Catterson (Ards SC) finished her Short Course season with a third gold medal of the meet in the 400m Freestyle and silver in the 50m Freestyle.
